Most people stay stuck in Beta brainwaves all day. Learn how high performers access Alpha and Theta to stop overthinking and take aligned action.
Ryan Nichols
Most people try to solve their overthinking with… more thinking.
They push harder, make longer to-do lists, and try to "will" themselves into focus.
But high performers?
They do something different.
They don’t just manage their thoughts—they shift their brainwave state.
If you’ve ever felt like your brain was spinning even when you wanted to slow down… this post will show you why—and what to do about it.
🔹 The 5 Brainwave States (And Why They Matter)
Your brain runs on electrical activity. These patterns—called brainwaves—change depending on your mental state.
Here are the 5 key types:
Gamma – Fastest waves. Insight, learning, peak moments.
Beta – Focused thinking, problem-solving, and... stress.
Alpha – Calm focus. Relaxed awareness. Great for flow, journaling, creativity.
Theta – Deep relaxation, visualization, subconscious rewiring.
Delta – Deep sleep and physical healing.
Most people stay stuck in Beta all day—answering emails, chasing productivity, and riding the dopamine rollercoaster.
But Beta isn’t built for clarity or creativity. It’s built for reactivity.
That’s why you feel exhausted but unfocused.
🎯 Great Brains Access the Deep
To remember the five states, I use the acronym GBATD:
Great Brains Access The Deep.
High performers don’t live in Beta.
They know when to shift into Alpha or Theta—where clarity, calm, and momentum live.
🚘 Your Brain Is a Transmission—Here’s How to Shift Gears
Think of your brain like a car with five gears:
Gamma = Overdrive – powerful, but short bursts only
Beta = 5th gear – useful, but easy to overheat
Alpha = 3rd gear – smooth focus, ideal for planning, creating, reflecting
Theta = 2nd gear – deep insight, emotional integration, rewiring
Delta = 1st gear or neutral – total reset during sleep
If you’re always in Beta, it’s like flooring it in traffic.
No wonder you’re tired and stuck.
🔄 How to Access Alpha & Theta on Purpose
You can train your brain to shift into Alpha and Theta more regularly.
Here’s how:
Meditation – Even 5–10 minutes can drop your brainwaves from Beta into Alpha
Breathwork – Box breathing or extended exhales can induce calm quickly
Guided hypnosis or visualization – Prime your subconscious with targeted input
Unstimulated downtime – Time without screens, stimulation, or urgency
Evening wind-downs – Gentle music, reflection, and slowing thoughts before bed
These aren’t “nice-to-haves.”
They’re essential if you want your mind to work with you—not against you.
🧠 Why This Matters for Action-Takers
Slowing your brainwaves may feel unnatural at first—especially if you're wired for pushing and achieving.
But no amount of willpower will override a subconscious stuck in survival mode.
As Einstein said:
“You can’t solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it.”
You have to access a new level of thinking.
A new state of mind.
And that happens when you stop spinning in Beta…and drop into Alpha and Theta.
